I have a APBT who is 2 years old sadly she must have come from a horrible breeder as she is already suffering from hip problems the doctor has her on rymidal for arthritis, but she is also fixed so she is leaning on the heavier side, i was wondering what kind of low key work out's can we give her that will both help her work off the weight but will not over stretch her muscles as currently her poor hip's cause he problems just playing ball for 30 minutes hurts her once she slows down.

  1. Swimming.  It's low impact on the joints!!!

  2. Do you have access to a vet hospital with a rehab specialist?

If so, consult with them. If not, consider breaking up her exercise into smaller segments - e.g. play ball for 10 minutes, rest 10-15 minutes, etc. and see if that eases up the stiffness/pain. You can also try doing warm-up exercises before play (a few play bows to stretch, a few spins in both directions, etc.) and cool-down as well. Gentle massage and T-touch may also help loosen her up before and after exercise.

  3.   Having your dog fixed, contrary to popular belief, does not cause her to be overweight.  Actually, having her fixed helped prevent many different cancers and infections from occurring in your pooch. For the problem your describe, I would suggest buying a good food that will help control her weight. Nutro is an excellent brand for this and can be purchased at a pet or feed store. Also, as you already have pointed out exerise is very important. You should probably keep it simple for her for awhile and stick to short walks that are at her pace, whatever that may be. Another thing I suggest for you is to look into some homeopathic remedies. The rymidal is great, but there are some supplements that may help her maintain or ever better the "hip health" she still has. The best website to find these supplements is www.onlynaturalpets.com. The company is wonderful and carry many great products that have helped many of the rescued dogs in my care, as I am a foster home for many dogs that haven't found their new home yet. I wish you luck and make sure you at least check the site.

  4. I'm not sure if you have acsess to a pool, but having your dog swim is great excersize and it's easy on their hips, I have Titus swim because he, Like your pit is a BYB wild creation to make money so he is bad hips too,:) Good luck with your puppy
