  1. Zoomtext is the best available magnifier. You can download and try it for free for 60 days at http://www.aisquared.com/

If he downloads it now, now would be a good time to start working on getting vocational rehab or the school's disability services to fund this for him.

  2. By "the settings on the computer" do you mean the normal ones or the ones available under Control Panel, Accessibility?  I have been there and enlarged the text beyond the normal range that way.  That's enough for me, but may not be for your roomie.  If you haven't tried that yet, please make that your first step.  It's really quick and easy.  If it doesn't work for him, you'll need to do something else.

Have you searched for this with a regular search engine?  If not, that should be your next step.  That's how I found an assistance device for a friend who has hearing loss.  Type in something like "computer screen magnification software" or "low vision computer assistance software" or some such thing.  It took me two or three tries to find the right wording that gave me the assistance device I wanted for my hard-of-hearing friend.  Keep at it.  He'll appreciate your help.
