Question:

Low math skills for ASVAB can I pass by working on other areas?

My son failed the ASVAB two times..got a 9. He only studied the math section and has a learning disability in Math. If he studies the word comprehension or other sections and does good on those is it possible the score in Math can be irrelevent enough to get in? He's pretty depressed about his score.

  1. I have mild to sever dyslexia and math is my WEAKEST point. I took one month and I studied English and Science for two weeks and the following two weeks I studied BASIC mathematics, the fundamentals of math, understanding "how" to do the problem, this helped me greatly and I ended up raising my score A LOT.

My first score was below the passing requirement, my second score was in the mid 90s.

Everyone is right, it is a test on what you DO know, not how you can do it. I used ASVAB for Dummys, worked great for me.

Tell him to keep trying, and don't give up on his dreams, if he REALLY wants this, he has to push himself.

  2. i highly doubt that if your son studies other areas he is likely to improve his score that much.  the ASVAB isnt a test of what you should know but rather a test of what do you know.  i have seen many people try to study for it but never really get anywhere due to lack of self motivation to stay on a goal.

if you would like and if he will do it have him go to the site march2success.com and register on line for help.

when someone scores in the single digits for this test though it usually means that there isnt any possiblility of a minimum score.

i wish him luck, there is no reason to be depressed over it though.  it is after all just a test.

  3. No -  each part of the ASVAB is timed.  You can know how to do math very well yet if you cannot comprehend what you are doing quickly, your doomed to fail the test.

Here's what he needs to do.  Since he has already not qualified 2x, he will have to wait 6 months before he tests again.

During his next test, on each section of the test, have him do what questions he can, and when the Test Proctor says they have 1 min to go, have him start checking off "B" for the remaining questions.

Since you are graded on correct answers, you have a better chance of getting a few more correct by just guessing at the remaining questions instead of leaving them blank (which of course, if left blank have no chance of being correct).

No guarantee of course that it will work in your son's case but worth a shot.

Also, in some remote, very remote cases, they can do Test Score Wivers.  This time in history might be a good time.  Again, who knows.  It's worth asking his recruiter about.

We didn't do ASVAB Score Waivers it in the Air Force however it was discussed in the enlistment regulations.

  4. Don't  worry he is not the only one that's bad at math I am 2! I have not taken the test but I will pretty soon. I am studying a book called Master the ASVAB by Scott A.Ostrow It comes w/ a cd and it helps a lot he could take the Entire Practice ASVAB test online for free and then he could go over all the questions that he missed. It gives u all the correct answers! Its helping me a lot also I bought a computer software called "Matering High School" by weekly reader 2009 Edition. it has several subjects that help alot like English, History, Science, Math-Pre algebra-Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Rapid calculation method. It really helps because they explain everything. You cant imagine how much it has help me I was really bad almost at everything but mainly Math and I am inproving yes it takes time but the point is to be patient! Also the ASVAB is scores are mainly in Math and English so he needs to score high on that. The rest of the subjects are to see what job he would be qualified for! So try to but these it helps alot and specially if he has a friend or maybe u that could help him study. I needed someone to study but I have no one! My brother is 2 little and my parents didnt even finish high school..So u could imagine what Im going trough! But good luck feel free to e-mail me if u have any more questions hope I could help!
