I have a vintage (circa 1989) Sony receiver (model STR-GX4ES) connected to a CD player and a speaker set. It had been in storage for a while, but was working beautifully when I first set it up.
Then, the sound in the left channel dropped dramatically and has static. I have isolated the problem to the receiver. When I swap the speakers and the wiring, the problem still occurs on the left side. When I plug headphones directly into the CD player everything is fine, but when I plug directly into the receiver, I get no sound on the left side of my headphones.
I also tried wiring the left speaker to the B channel (leaving the right speaker on A). When I turn the volume way up, I do get sound but there is static and of course, it is way out of balance with the right speaker.
So...what is going on here and is this something I can fix myself? Thanks in advance for your help!
