Question:

Lower jaw pain when running?

Is it normal to occasionally get lower jaw pain when running? I usually get it when my heart rate is up really high.

The scary part is that I was just in my CPR/First Aid class yesterday and they were talking about female symptoms of heart attack and stuff and they said a drilling sensation in the jaw is one of them. And that's exactly how it feels, in the root area of my lower front teeth....

So, what do you think? I don't think it's heart attack at all, otherwise there would be other serious symptoms. And on top of that I'm only 17.

  1. sometimes my throat muscle cramps up.  Keep your shoulders and neck relaxed, especially in strideouts.

  2. Try a mouth guard to help decrease the pressure on your teeth

  3. mine also hurts esp when I cross the 8km mark.

or if the weather is dusty.

    its annoying .saps your energy

  4. This is likely caused by clenching your jaw as you start working closer to your max.  Some people clench their hands which will cause pain in the shoulders.  There is a chance that you are stiffening your shoulders which will then go to your neck into your jaw.  First try to run more relaxed!

    Good Luck!

  5. My best friend on our cross country team used to do this.  Whenever he would start to run hard his jaw would hurt so we watched him run and he was grinding his teeth while running.  So although it sounds dumb just try to open your mouth while running.
