Question:

Lowering my Gsxr750?

I just bought a new 08 gsxr750 yesterday and when I asked for them to lower it, they said they didn’t’ do it at the shop. Anyway, the technician say that I don’t even have to lower it but when I hold the bike up, im on my tippy-toes. Would you recommend me getting my bike dropped at least 3 inches? But I’ve heard that people scratches the bottom of their bikes when dropped 3” from stock? Will it go down after its broken in? it has ZERO miles on it and I don’t’ even have my permit yet!! Hopefully I will get that tomorrow after I pass the test. What’s your opinion? Should I drop it or leave it the way it is? Oh, and I won’t ride it til I get some frame sliders on there =)

  1. Wrong category.  This is for bicycling.  But I'm also a motorcyclist, so I'll try to help.

What you need are "dog bone" lowering links for the rear.  You can install them yourself if you have minimal wrenching skills.  I've provided a link to an eBay ad (where the prices are usually the best) below.  You need these to lower the rear.  The front should be lowered as well.  You don't need parts for this, just loosen the triple tree and slide the fork legs up.

3 inches of lowering is not radical for a GSXR.  It does limit your suspension travel, which will affect the ride a bit, making it slightly more harsh.  You may bottom more often, but it doesn't change the ultimate bottom stop, and should not result in any "scratches."  And, no, it won't just naturally get lower after it's broken in.

I wouldn't go any more than 3 inches, and I'd limit it to 2 inches if that will allow your feet to touch (in boots remember, where your soles will be thicker).

With this much lowering you'll probably also need to cut down the kick stand.  Don't overlook that.

You've bought a great bike.  Be very careful on it until you get used to it.  It is very powerful for a first motorcycle.

    Ben
