Loyal Cesc Fabregas backs former club Barcelona to beat Real Madrid
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has declared his support for former club Barcelona in the derby against Real Madrid.
Fabregas, who joined Arsenal from the Catalan club in 2003, has long been rumoured to be on his way back to Barcelona after rising to prominence with Arsene Wenger's team.
Although a deal has yet to materialize, Fabregas has always been vocal in his admiration for his hometown club.
"No one should be surprised at my feelings for Barcelona because I have never hidden them. My family are Cules [Barcelona supporters] to the core, I was raised at La Masia, and that’s why I say I want to see Barca win," the midfielder told
Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo about his strong allegiance to Pep Guardiola's team, adding that he thought the Catalans were in for a stronger challenge from Real than in previous years.
"As a Cule, I want Barcelona to win. As a professional, El Clasico is seen as a sensational game in which the club maintains its incredible history, but Madrid are much improved compared to last season's. I see them being more dangerous
than in other years."
Real look to extend unbeaten streak
Real, boosted by the arrival of Jose Mourinho this summer, are unbeaten this season, but will have to labour for a result at the Camp Nou in Monday's derby.
Fabregas added that Real's tactical strength reminded him of the rigidity of Premier League champions Chelsea, a team Mourinho managed between 2004 and 2007.
"Their team reminds me of Chelsea, with a typically English game. They push high up, looking for the slightest mistake in midfield, and have attackers who are very dangerous. They are very good at stealing possession in the opposition half."
A win would extend Real's lead over Barcelona to four points, while the Catalans could overtake Mourinho's team at the top of the table with a home victory.
