  1. Cheap and tinny vs. cheap and tinny.  Keep looking.

  2. VIPER 50

  3. Well, I recently bought both an LTD EC-50 and an EC-100QM. I don't have any experience with the Viper 50, but I can at least give you my impression of the LTD's.

Off the shelf they played and sounded okay - nothing to holler about. The necks feel better to me than the thinner Jackson Dinky neck I've been playing, so that's cool.

I did not like the pickups on the EC-50, the sound was definitely sub-optimal.

I put a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge of the EC-50 and had my guitar tech install an onboard buffer. After that and a thorough setup and intonation it sounds and plays a h**l of a lot better!

The EC-100QM is completely taken apart right now, I'm in the process of shielding, grounding, rewiring, and upgrading the pickups on it, but off the shelf it was more acceptable than the EC-50, especially with the buffer circuit.

  4. As far as which will get you a better sound, sustain, or playabilty, neither. Both are pretty much identical in material. Same basswood body with bolt maple necks, tail pieces, pickups, and all of the other extras. It is more of the style you go for, being a SG guy I would probably go with the Viper, but if you like the LP style you would probably prefer the EC series. As a guitarist you should make your own image and go for the style you want.
