Lu/Moser overcome Lipsky/Ram in the first round – Farmers Classic 2011
Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei and Frank Moser of Germany survived the second set drubbing to rally past Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 7-5, 2-6, 10-3 in the opening round at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Taiwanese/German pair took one hour and twenty minutes to oust their opponents in a tough match.
Lu/Moser and the American pair could not break each other in the first eleven games of the opening set and took the score to 6-5 in favour of the former. The Taiwanese/German team broke Lipsky and Ram in the twelfth game and sealed the set 7-5.
Lu and Moser kept their first serve percentage at 61 percent and hit two aces in the first set. The Taiwanese/German duo converted 73 percent of the first serves and 57 percent of the second serves into points in the opening set. In comparison, Lipsky and Ram gave a better service performance, hitting 68 percent of the first serves and three aces in the first set. The American team also bagged 78 percent of the first service points and 45 percent of the second service points. However, they failed to convert any of the five break chances they received and could not save one of the two break points they faced in the opening set.
After losing a tight first set, Lipsky and Ram came roaring into the second set as they broke the Taiwanese/German pair in the first game and held their next service game to take a 2-0 lead. The Americans broke Lu and Moser again in the fifth game and capitalised on the double break of serve to seal the set 6-2.
Lipsky and Ram smacked one ace and 60 percent of the first deliveries, clinching 75 percent of the points on them in the second set. The American duo grabbed an amazing seven of the eight second service points. Lipsky and Ram captured 35 percent of the points on the first returns compared to 25 percent by the Taiwanese/German pair in the second set.
Lu and Moser made a great comeback in the match tie-break and crushed their opponents. They earned five mini-breaks and lost only one point on their own serve, sealing the match tie-break 10-3.
The Taiwanese/German duo converted 100 percent of the first serves into points and captured three of the five first return points in the match tie-break.
Lu and Moser will play Michael Berrer and Tommy Haas of Germany in the quarterfinals.
