Lu Ying dominates Women’s 50m butterfly: Day one – 2011 World University Games
Lu Ying of China displayed her overwhelming efforts to capture the gold medal of the Women’s 50m butterfly meet on the initial day of the 2011 World University Games on Sunday, August 14, in Shenzhen, China.
Ying showered her incredible skills in the final of butterfly event, by occupying the gold crown, with a timing of 25.98 seconds. She missed the world record of Swedish swimmer, Therese Alshammar, with a difference of only 0.91 seconds, as Alshammar earned
the title of same event in 25.07 seconds at the 2009 Rome World Championships. Her time was also 0.01 seconds slower than the Game Record of 25.97 seconds, held by Svetlana Khokhlova of Bulgaria in 2009.
The champion was 0.26 seconds faster than her closest competitor, Marieke Guehrer of Australia, who stepped on the podium for the silver medal, by reporting in a time of 26.24 seconds. She was trailed by her team-member, Alice Mills, who was just 0.29 seconds
behind the silver medallist and ended her swim in a time of 26.53 seconds.
In the meantime, the previous Game Record holder of the event, Khakhlova, who failed to defend her title, transpired as the fourth fastest swimmer of the event, by clocking a time of 26.69 seconds. She was chased by Lyndsay De Paul of USA, who earned fifth
best spot of the single-lap race and concluded her swim in 26.81 seconds.
Subsequently, De Paul edged out her closest competitor, Darya Stepanyuk of Ukraine, with a difference of 0.07 seconds, as she produced a time of 26.88 seconds. De Paul’s team-mate, Felicia Lee remained 0.18 seconds slower than her preceding swimmer and posted
an effort of 27.06 seconds. The last spot of the event was secured by Misaki Ago of Japan, who settled as the eighth position holder after she touched the finishing wall to end her swim with a timing of 27.21 seconds.
Ying was overjoyed with her title claiming effort in the butterfly discipline, whereas, the winners were invited on the victory stand after the completion of the session.
