Lu Ying wins Women’s 50m butterfly: Day one – 2011 World University Games
Lu Ying of China won the title of the Women’s 50m butterfly swim on the first day of the 2011 World University Games on August 14, in Shenzhen, China.
Ying demonstrated her stupendous skills in the final of single-lap event and posted a time of 25.98 seconds for gold medal. With her extraordinary effort, she missed the world record of 25.07 seconds, made by Swedish swimmer, Therese Alshammar, at the 2009
Rome World Championships.
The champion was 0.26 seconds away from her following swimmer, Marieke Guehrer of Australia, who reached the podium for silver medal with a timing of 26.24 seconds. She was chased by her team-member, Alice Mills, who remained marginally away from the second
position holder and finished her swim in a time of 26.53 seconds.
In the meantime, Khakhlova, who failed to defend her title, emerged as the fourth best swimmer of the discipline by posting a time of 26.69 seconds. She was trailed by USA’s Lyndsay De Paul, who claimed fifth position of the one-lap swim and ended her swim
in 26.81 seconds.
Consequently, De Paul out-touched her closest rival, Darya Stepanyuk of Ukraine, with a margin of 0.07 seconds as she clocked a time of 26.88 seconds for sixth position. De Paul’s team-member, Felicia Lee posted a seventh fastest time of 27.06 seconds.
Meanwhile, Australian relay team clinched the title of Women’s 4*100m freestyle relay by submitting a time of 3 minutes and 40.03 seconds. They were followed by the relay squad of United States, which captured silver medal of the event with a timing of 2
minutes and 40.19 seconds. The Chinese team finished their relay race in third place, as they remained 0.10 seconds away from USA and clocked a time of 3 minutes and 40.29 seconds for bronze medal.
The Japanese squad ended fourth, as they completed their swim in a time of 3 minutes and 43.72 seconds. They were tracked by Canada, which occupied fifth position of the event by submitting a time of 3 minutes and 44.35 seconds. Relay team of Italy surfaced
as the sixth fastest finisher of the event, as they posted a time of 3 minutes and 44.50 seconds. New Zealand settled as the seventh position holder of the event as they produced a time of 3 minutes and 44.64 seconds.
The crowd appreciated the gruelling efforts of all participants who contested in these two events. In addition, Ying was delighted with her gold winning effort in the 50m event, whereas, the winners were invited on the victory stand after the completion
of the session.
