I would like some decorating ideas for a luau hawiian birthday party. I am on a budget (arent we all!) so i need HOMEMADE ideas that I can start preparing for the party in June. I have heard of tiki totems from toilet rolls, and leis from paper flowers and straws. any more ideas? Thanks so much!

  1. These aren't things you make per se, but they are inexpensive ways to decorate:

You could ask your local travel agency if they have any old posters that they aren't using anymore, that they could give you. Also they might have some brochures. Go to the Visitors' Bureau website www.gohawaii.com and see what you might be able to find there.

Closer to the party date you can decorate with whole fresh pineapples, bananas and coconuts which will often be cheaper than the fake paper stuff you can buy at a party store.

  2. There are a lot of hawaiian type things at the Dollar stores, you might want to check there, things are only a dollar and you wouldn't have to spend time making things.

  3. Pineapples. They serve as both decoration and food. Toward the end of the evening you can cut them and use them to make blender drinks, or slice them up and grill them. I like to brush them with a little olive oil and hot sauce before grilling. Mmm.

Remember making papier-mache when you were a kid? Blow up balloons and tape them or twist them together into the shapes you want. then cut up strips of newspaper and dip them into flour mixed with water to make the paste. Wrap the dipped strips around the balloons and let the whole thing dry; then you can paint. You could make fake fruit (coconuts, pineapples, bananas), monkeys, or just colorful random objects.

  4. Dollar Tree has a whole aisle of luau stuff... Get pinapples and they  have cute little tiki cups and leis and little trays just all sorts of stuff and you wont spend more than 40 or 50 dollars.. they even have the grass skirts and cocunut tops

  5. Serve fruit kebobs on bamboo skewers, and stick them into a fresh pineapple, and use that as a centerpiece.  ...Buy strands of little silk/artificial orchids and strew them all over the table  ...Use big leaves (real or fake) under plates on the buffet, or as placemats ...   Go to a $1 store for votive candles  .... DO check out Oriental Trading Co's website.  They are incredibly cheap and have tons of luau decorations.  They have grass skirts to go around the table!
