  1. I choose the white cake.  That's pretty.  A luau should be bright and colorful with lots of flowers, traditionally. I guess if you have other ideas, you could change it up a bit.  I think rainbow colors are a great way to go.  Have fun and enjoy your party.

  2. Ok, are you having a wedding????  If so, I like cake #2 myself because it incorporates orchids and has a nice shape and color scheme.  If you aren't having a wedding, I'd forego the tiered effect and choose something similar in style, but less "wedding-like".  As for decorations:

    1.  Tiki poles and lanterns

    2.   Wooden picnic tables

    3.  Grass placemats

    4.  Centerpieces with a variety of exotic blooms, filled with color and fragrance

    5.  Candles and lanterns, lots of greenery (you might want to rent some of the larger palms etc.)

    6.  Fountains or running water

Food for your gathering might include:

    1.  Roast pig (take a large pork butt and slow cook it in a crock pot or oven until it pulls apart easily with forks.  Season with kosher salt and pepper and allow a "crust" to form (more flavorful) as it cooks)

    2.  Lomi Lomi:  finely chopped salmon tartare or smoked salmon with red onion, cilantro, lemon juice, tomatos.  Let sit overnight to marinate the flavors.

    3.  Grilled chicken

    4.  Several salads:  green salad with several dressings, baby spinach salad with mandarin oranges, candied walnuts, and feta; macaroni and potato salads (especially potato, very popular in the islands)

    5.  Seafood salad:  your favorite combination of shrimp, lobster, crab tossed with chopped celery, onion, mayonaise, lemon.  Serve on lettuce or endive leaves.

    6.  Hawaiian rolls with sweet butter.

    7.  Fresh fruit platter:  melon slices, strawberries, pineapple spears, mango, papaya etc.  Consider a yogurt/marshmallow creme dipping sauce.

    8.  Dessert platter:  custard cups, brownie bites, lemon bars, macadamia nut cookies

    9.  To drink:  create a signature punch, such as a combination of hawaiian punch, lemonade, vodka, and sparkling water.  Have plenty of sodas, sparkling waters and beer and wine on hand.

    Enjoy!

  3. Luaus are all about bright colors, hula girls, and flowers. You can go to http://www.orientaltrading.com/applicati... They have inexpensive, fun items.

Personally, I don't like either of those cakes. They are too fancy for an everyday party. You could do something like this: http://www.kayscakes.net/alloccasioncake...

  4. I would take the white cake (the second one) but the flowers should be brighter.

As far as decorations...Leis for sure, tiki torches, lanterns, candles, I don't know if streamers would be too childish...but if you just stuck with a few colors you might be ok (I'd suggest Purple, Orange and Red).  You could make table pieces with sand, shells, sand dollars, dried starfish on mirrors.

  5. I like the cake with the orchids.  the orchids can be any color, since they come in a myriad of colors.  if you go with a tasteful hawaiian wedding, i'd suggest lavendar, pink, green or white orchids.  choose orchids that are close to your color theme.

just stay away from the tacky flower leis and bright tourist print theme.

    and by the way, congratulations!

  6. i like the 2nd cake i would do all different colors...
