Question:

Lubricating an Expandable Baton

I have an expandable Baton that I have to flick it for the tip to come out and I was wondering if it needs to be lubed every time I use it. And also, when I shake it gently it closes also, even if I were to poke someone (but you have to poke someone really hard for it to shut.) is that natural?

  1. They don't need much oil, usually.  Maybe once a month, or each week with heavy use.  Gun oil is a good type to use, just a little bit once in a while on the joints.

Now, normally they are not supposed to close just by shaking or poking gently.  I see this in the cheap imitation brands often, rather than name-brand ASP or Monadnock.  Over-oiling might do this too.  But your baton should not do that.

If you have a cheap one, you might invest in an ASP or a Monadnock Autolock.  Autolocks are my preferred type because they lock opening using a ball-bearing system rather than friction and can be closed with a button.
