Question:

Lubrication of steering system on 99 Ford Taurus....power steering filter?

I can not find any grease zerts on any of my suspension/steering components on my 99 Ford Taurus. Also where would the power steering filter be? My manual says in the return line....but I have not found yet and Parts source does not list one. My Haynes manual does not show any zert locations either. Nothing on ball joints/tie rods/etc. Is this accurate?

My steering is super stiff. Basically no assist. I have changed the pump. I did not change any hoses or flush the system. I did my best to bleed the system as per my manual.

Once in a while I find that while I am parked and I turn the wheel slowly it has some assist. Not noticeable while driving though.

Going for another test drive now to verify a few thing.

  1. that vehicle has no grease points. there is no filter for the power steering, s for the steering being stiff, double check the power steering fluid level and tire pressure. all that you have to do to bleed that system is to rock the steering wheel form stop to stop a couple of times and recheck the level.

  2. Welcome to Ford parts. The standard Ford tie-rod ends have no grease fittings. Replacement Moog, TRW and Spicer rod ends DO have grease fittings. Mke sure your replacements have grease fittings on them.

There is a power steering filter inside the fill reservoir. Try having your power-steering system completely flushed at a dealership or by a private mechanic. Do not trust the "fast oil change places" with this service. If the flush does not fix the problen you're looking at a re-manufactured power steering rack. They are a bit*ch to change in a Sable or Taurus.

  3. yes they will not have any unless they was replace and some of them dont have them either most every car now does not have them they just replace  and no filters on any power steering i know of.. check you belt and fill with fluid.. to bleed you turn al the way one way and back a few times most offen it wil work it self out
