Luca Brecel’s hopes end as Stephen Maguire hits second round: 2012 World Snooker Championship
Belgium’s Luca Brecel started his 2012 World Snooker Championship campaign as a qualifier and played brilliantly in the qualifying session after winning four matches he made his way into the initial round of the Championship.
The youngster faced Scotland’s Stephen Maguire in the first round but was unable to clinch the victory and lost to the Scotsman by the score line of 10-5.
The 17-year-old had a good start in the first round and looked fine against the Scotsman but after the second session of the game, Brecel tumble down.
Belgian potter did show some outstanding snooker genius during his play and received a lot of appreciation from the spectators. With this defeat, Brecel’s hopes to make an appearance in his debut Crucible entry have ended.
At the end of game’s second session, the Scot was leading the score board with three frames at 6-3. Maguire fired impressive knocks of 101 and 94 to hit the lead.
Former World Snooker Championship semi-finalist needed four frames to book his place in the second round which he took easily and ousted the debutant by 10-5.
While speaking to World Snooker after his match, Maguire said, “I was excited to play him. It's his first time here, and because of all the publicity that he deserves it was exciting to play him in the first round. He's a potting machine, he's one of the
fastest players that I've seen and he's fearless.”
He added, “Obviously it was important that I got off to a good start to put him under the cosh a little bit but once he started just letting his cue go he didn't look like he was going to miss.”
Maguire has played convincingly in the current season grabbing some noticeable wins during his run in the season. Maguire will next meet the winner of first round match between the former World Snooker Championship finalist Graeme Dott and England’s Joe
Perry. The 31-year-old is ready to face anyone as he believes he can defeat any challenger. It will interesting to see how Brecel can manage to make a come-back and build up some confidence in his game.
