Luca Di Montezemolo wants a third Ferrari on the Formula 1 grid
The Ferrari team wants another car on the grid for the Formula 1 racing. The Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo admitted that he has been pushing the sports governing body FIA to allow the teams with better funding to include a third car for the season.
The Ferrari president also hinted at the possible partnership with the American giants in motor sports Penske and Gannasi. His revelations though caused some panic amongst the motor sports fans in America and in Italy.
If the FIA agrees to the inclusion of a third car in the grid, this will improve the chances of Ferrari to win the constructors championship and this move can also hurt some of the smaller teams which are taking part in the sport.
Commenting on his idea of a third car and his possible partnership, Montezemolo said, “It would be nice to see a third Ferrari fielded perhaps by a private American team. I'm thinking of a team like Ganassi or Penske. On the question of a third car, we are
determined.”
Ferrari is probably the best funded team on the grid as some of the other teams as Toyota, Honda and BMW have parted from the sport. The Ferrari president said that if the team doesn’t have sufficient funding, it can move to another sport like the GP2 series.
He stated, “If a team does not have the money to be in Formula 1, they can go to GP2.”
Montezemolo also believes that the inclusion of smaller teams is not good for the drivers who are talented but cannot compete against the top teams because of the poor performances of the car they have. He further added, “It is disheartening to see someone
like Jarno Trulli many seconds behind. Think what Jarno could do with a Ferrari given to his team.”
The smaller teams like Lotus, Virgin and HRT didn’t have enough time to develop their car and prepare the funding for the 2010 season and as a result these three teams were way behind the others throughout the season. Many critics are against the smaller
teams due to lack of competition and they also claim that it is unsafe for the other faster teams to have slower cars on the grid.
The Ferrari team may still be determined on the inclusion of another car but most of the other teams have rejected this idea.
