Luca Filippi hopes to become a part of Formula 1 for 2011
Most of the drivers who have been giving an extraordinary performance in motorsports like GP2, Formula 3 etc. are now aiming to drive in Formula 1 and some of them even believe that they are good enough to get signed by any of the teams for next season.
Drivers like Nico Hulkenberg, Nick Heidfeld have been unable to find a seat for the 2011 Formula 1 season despite the fact that they have already proved that they have what it takes to become a Formula 1 driver and score points consistently.
On the other hand, it was quite disappointing to see some teams choose money over talent. Williams recently replaced Nico Hulkenberg with Pastor Maldonado despite the fact that Nico has more experience and pace than Pastor. It is quite clear that the team
replaced the young German just because Maldonado was bringing a major sponsor from PDVSA with him as a part of his package.
Nevertheless, Luca Filippi believes that he might be able to secure a spot for 2011 even though there are limited full season seats left up for the grabs. Owing to his desire, Luca wants to become a part of the sport this year at all costs, even if he is
offered a spot as a test driver for one of the teams. However, he admits that even a test drive is quite difficult at the moment.
Filippi was the runner-up for the 2009 GP2 Asian series and has proved that he has the pace to challenge the big cheeses of the sport.
“I'm seriously working to find a place in F1, no matter if it's as a test driver. I already did that for Honda F1 in 2008, and I think that with what I've shown throughout my career I should be linked to an F1 team today,” said Filippi, runner-up in the
2009 GP2 Asia series.
Luca used to test for Honda F1 back in 2008 and he is aware of the current situation and requirements of the teams.
“You know, last year after finishing second in GP2 Asia a Formula 1 deal seemed really close for me, so I don't feel that I can already call it quits. Anyway I must also be realistic and to be fair I can't see that happening at the moment, too many things
have to fall in place,” he added.
However, he claims that he will stay in GP2, if he is unable to find a drive in Formula 1.
