Luca di Montezemolo, Bernie Ecclestone question logic of moving to V4 engines in 2013 – Formula 1
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and Formula 1 management chief executive officer Bernie Ecclestone have questioned the logic of using V4 powered engines in the sport from 2013.
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has already passed these new regulations which clearly state that the teams will have to use four-cylinder turbo engines in order to decrease the yearly budget assigned to them.
It is believed that the FIA is going to hold some meetings with the engine manufacturers soon in order to discuss these changes. One of the meetings is going to be held in Barcelona where the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix is expected to take place this weekend.
Most of the people including Ferrari’s president Luca di Montezemolo and Formula 1 Management’s CEO Bernie Ecclestone have criticised these new rules. Bernie believes that the new rules for formula 1 are a “joke.”
“The FIA made its decision based on false assumptions, without considering the side effects. The manufacturers and the teams need to go to the FIA and say they have thought about it and concluded that while the decision seemed right then, from today's perspective
it is wrong,” said Ecclestone.
Ferrari on the other hand stated that their new Formula 1 car is going to have little relevance to its road cars. Other than that, Renault’s Eric Boullier told the media that the FIA should come up with a decision which would be beneficial for the sport
as a whole.
“We should think more about how to improve Formula One. If we have to stick to the V8 because in the end we can't afford the change, because we cannot reproduce the sound that the fans want, then we should stick with the V8 - or at least wait a little bit
before moving to something new,” he said.
Even Mercedes and some other teams are doubtful of this decision but it is expected that a lot of information would be revealed regarding this matter after the FIA’s meeting with the engine manufacturers in Barcelona.
