Luca di Montezemolo: Alonso is right to think about 2011, Ferrari keeping eye on 2012 – Formula 1
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has stated that after the British Grand Prix win in the 2011 Formula 1 season, Fernando Alonso is right to set his eyes on the championship but the Ferrari team is being realistic and keeping an eye on the 2012 season
as well.
Luca added that he asked for a great reaction from the team and it paid off as the Silverstone win is a great one for the Scarlet team.
The Ferrari camp started to give away hopes of the championship title as they stated that the gap to the front runners, both on track and the championship table, is very big and the Scarlet team will soon shift their attention to the 2012 car.
Luca at that time stated that Ferrari should not quit that early in the season and should try hard. Although the team’s efforts paid off in Silverstone, still Luca is not hoping for the championship yet and is being realistic about it.
Luca stated, “We'll count the points at the end. In the meantime we are working with next year in mind too. [Alonso] is right to keep hoping [about the title], because hope dies last. We are all disappointed of not having been where we wanted to be at the
start of the season, and this is why I'm pleased with the Silverstone victory.”
He further added, “The victory has certainly come at the right time, after a lot of work. I asked for a great reaction and I thank our men for the effort and the capabilities shown.”
Luca added that the Silverstone win also reminds the team of their first victory back in the 1951 season and since then Ferrari have been at every single race of every season.
The 2011 Formula 1 season continues in Germany on July 24 and it will be interesting to see what Ferrari’s approach is towards the race because Alonso clearly stated that the Scarlet car has nothing to lose.
