Luca di Montezemolo: FIA rule over diffuser was quite sudden, Ferrari will ask questions – Formula 1
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has stated that the International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) recent rule change over blown diffuser will hurt the team in their development of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Luca added that previously the rule changed after the season ended so that the development race was not hurt but now the FIA changed the rules over the course of weeks which is quite sudden for Formula 1 technical staff.
“Unfortunately we have to deal with a carousel of changes to the regulations, which do not help us. Once, the rules were changed after every year, and then it was every six months, now they change within a weekend,” stated Luca.
He stated that although there was not a problem with the rule change but the sudden change over the course of the Silverstone Grand Prix was not very wise. Luca also stated that the Ferrari team will surely question the sudden rule changes by the FIA.
Luca commented, “The situation was paradoxical. But sometimes you have to put aside your personal interests. We want what is good for Formula One. This must definitely end. Rules should be made to last. Ferrari will definitely take up this issue with the
rule makers.”
Right before the Silverstone Grand Prix, the FIA decided to pull the plug on the use of off throttle blown diffuser for the remainder of the season. Then again before the Silverstone Qualifiers, Renault-powered teams were allowed to use 50 percent off throttle
use of the blown diffuser after they claimed that exhaust gases were required to cool off their engines.
However, before the race could start on Sunday, the FIA again restricted the use of blown diffuser completely.
Soon after the Silverstone Grand Prix, the FIA decided once again to let the teams run the blown diffuser for the remainder of the 2011 season.
The last ten Grands Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season will feature the blown diffuser and the ban on the diffuser will be finalised after the 2011 season concludes in Brazil.
