Luca di Montezemolo: Formula 1 Grand Prix should be held later in the day
Formula 1 is currently on the verge of a revolution as the FIA hopes to introduce an extremely efficient 4 cylinder turbo engine by the 2013 Formula 1 season in order to save fuel, money and time. Other than that, the FIA is taking the sport to various countries
in order to make Formula 1 a global sport including countries like India, Korea, Russia and many others.
However, Ferrari’s president Luca di Montezemolo believes that Formula 1 would be more entertaining if the teams are allowed to use three cars at each venue. He believes that if the FIA does that, the back running teams will be forced to leave the sport
and as a result, Formula 1 would become more entertaining and competitive.
“We don't want to build it for the Scuderia, but for another team. A Spanish [team], an American, whatever,” said Montezemolo.
Luca was criticized for even thinking of this idea because Formula 1 would be nothing without these back running teams. It is these teams that rise and win championships from some of the most established teams in the sport. Red Bull and Renault are the perfect
examples for this debate.
Other than that, di Montezemolo recently stated that in order to attract a bigger audience at each venue, the FIA should keep the races later in the afternoon.
“I don't think it's good that in July or August the races begin at 2 o'clock when most people are lying on the beach. Football games don't get started until 5 o'clock or later,” the Italian told the media.
Most of the races on the Formula 1 calendar kick off early in the morning and it is mainly because of the fact that since Formula 1 is watched all across the world, they want to keep a standard time for their viewers and in order to do that, they are bound
to keep the races at a fixed time.
Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see what the professionals and FIA have to say about this idea in the near future.
