Luca di Montezemolo believes Michael Schumacher will not return to Ferrari – Formula 1 news
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said that Michael Schumacher will not return to their team and expressed that the German made the right decision to retire from the sport.
Schumacher announced that he will retire from F1 at the end of 2012 after the news of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes was confirmed.
The seven-time world champion came back to the sport with the Brackley based squad back in 2010 and failed to attain competitive results for his team. In the last three seasons, he was completely outclassed by his teammate, Nico Rosberg.
Even though, he secured an amazing third podium finish in the European Grand Prix, this year. However, he could not score points with consistency and struggled a lot with some technical and reliability issues in his car.
It will be important to mention that he returned with an aim to win the championship which unfortunately he couldn’t achieve. Nonetheless, he expressed that he is not feeling upset over the results of the last three seasons as he has accomplished so much in his career so far.
Additionally, he has said that he is earnestly looking forward to spend some time with his family and has no plan to return to the sport.
F1 CEO, Bernie Ecclestone has also said that the legendary driver should enjoy his life after retirement.
“He doesn’t have to work, he doesn’t have to worry and he can do what he wants to do,” Ecclestone said. “Doesn’t that sound good?”
There are many speculations that the veteran German driver will make his second comeback in F1. However, Montezemolo disagrees with all the rumours.
“That will not happen,” Montezemolo said.
Besides, he said that it is quite disappointing that the record championship holder couldn’t win any race after his return. Nevertheless, he asserted that Schumacher made the right decision to retire.
“It is a pity he did not win another race (in his comeback), nevertheless it was right of him to retire now,” he added.
Although, Montezemolo is planning to take part in politics, but he has insisted that Ferrari will always remain his first priority.
“No, I would not want that,” he insisted. “Besides my family, Ferrari is my great love.”
