Luca di Montezemolo labels Sebastian Vettel rumours to be false – Formula 1 news
The team president for Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, has denied rumours stating that Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing team will be joining them by the end of 2013.
According to a report given by BBC, Felipe Massa is expected to have his contract extended for another year with Ferrari, but that will only be a stop gap before Vettel is set to become a part of the team next season.
It was also revealed that Vettel might have a pre-contract agreement with Ferrari and when Ferrari did not stop Sergio Perez from joining McLaren, the rumours started to intensify even more.
Even though Vettel has a contract with Red Bull until the end of 2014 and a Red Bull spokesperson had told ESPNF1 that he will surely stay with the team in 2014, the team advisor for Red Bull, Helmut Marko has constantly hinted that there are some performance-based
clauses within the contract that allow the player to quit team. He also said there was very less that they could do if Vettel really decides to leave.
Despite all these rumours, Montezemolo has come clear about having a definite number one and two for his team.
“I've always said that I don't want two roosters in the hen-house,” Montezemolo told Italy's Radio1. “I don't like that and it creates instability in the team.”
The team president also confessed that after Massa’s recent performance it is imminent that he will stay with the team, something he had admitted to be ‘unthinkable’ during the mid of the current season when the player had not been performing well.
He said, “Undoubtedly, at half-season it was unthinkable to reconfirm Massa; now he's meeting our expectations, tomorrow we'll discuss it and then we'll take the decision. Massa performed very well in Monza and in Japan; it is a Massa reborn.”
He also added, “I think that he's always given a lot to Ferrari and that he built a good team spirit with Alonso. I put my stakes on him to gnaw points away from our adversaries.”
As far as Vettel is concerned, he himself has confessed to have no plans quitting his team Red Bull. He has told the media that he has been wearing that helmet for quite a while now and it will be difficult leaving it. Both of his championships have been
earned while driving for Red Bull and he is already set to win another one.
