Luca di Montezemolo says Scuderia Ferrari should be competitive rather than slow – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s President Luca di Montezemolo has said that Ferrari should be competitive in the 2011 Formula 1 season instead of giving it up so early.
Luca added that Ferrari should be looking to improve their sixth or seventh place finishes. He added that Ferrari were very close to victory in the last two races but did not win. However, he said they will not give up title hopes just yet.
Recently, Ferrari’s technical director Aldo Costa said that Ferrari were far away from any title hope and will wait until the Silverstone Grand Prix to start working on the 2012 car.
Luca has now said that Ferrari will make every bit of effort to stay alive in the 2011 season.
He said, “I don't like to talk about bad luck I'd rather see a competitive Ferrari that stops, rather than one that finishes sixth or seventh. This car was not born well, but I know the quality and determination of my men. We must respond knowing that this
season did not start as we wanted – but hope dies last.”
Luca added that Fernando Alonso’s crash with Jenson Button was a bit unlucky in which the Spaniard went out of the race and the Brit won it.
Luca added, “I am sure we will soon win races. Ferrari is not a team that throws in the towel even when the chance for the title is the slightest one. This is a policy I support 100 per cent.”
Luca further hoped that Ferrari will put up a great show in Valencia and then in the Silverstone Grand Prix as well.
Ferrari are 154 points behind the Red Bull team in the constructors’ championship after just seven races of the season.
Meanwhile Alonso, the leading Ferrari driver, is 92 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ championship battle.
Nevertheless, 12 races are still to be contested and it will be interesting to see how Ferrari perform in them to minimise the gap from the leader to have a real go at the end of the season.
