Luca di Montezemolo says Sergio Perez needs more experience to drive Ferrari – Formula 1 news
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said that Sergio Perez of Sauber-Ferrari, which is the sister concern of the Scarlet team, needs more experience to become a part of his team.
Di Montezemolo expressed his views in response to the ongoing speculations that Perez has been considered as a potential replacement of Felipe Massa in Ferrari. Although, he said that the Mexican driver has got the talent but he believes that in order to
sit behind the wheel of Ferrari one must be well experienced.
“Perez is a good driver but to drive a Ferrari you need more experience,” di Montezemolo was quoted as saying by Reuters last week. “I think he is one of the potential best young drivers for the future but before putting a young driver in a Ferrari I need
more experience and more results.”
It will be important to mention that the head of Ferrari driver academy, Luca Baldisserri also said that Perez often suffers in the race because of his too aggressive driving style.
“We wanted to find out why recent results had not lived up to expectations after the Malaysian Grand Prix. Perez is undoubtedly talented, but he often lets himself down by being too aggressive which, especially in Formula 1, does not deliver results,” said
Baldisserri.
At present, Perez is standing at ninth place in the drivers’ championship with 37 points. Besides, he is ahead of Pastor Maldonado of Williams and behind Jenson Button of McLaren with 8 points.
Furthermore, he has performed quite convincingly in the season so far and has shown some striking performances in couple of grands prix.
He secured an incredible second podium finish in the Malaysian GP held at Sepang International Circuit on wet track behind the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari after starting the race from 9th place in the grid.
In addition, he delivered a striking performance in the Canadian GP held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal in which he secured an inspiring third podium finish.
Even though, he has not been able to score points in four out of the first seven races. Nevertheless, he is still been deemed as a very competitive contender in this year’s championship fight.
Over and above, he is confidently looking forward to perform well in the approaching season.
