Luca di Montezemolo says V6 good for F1, aerodynamics should be reserved – Formula 1 news
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has stated that the V6 turbocharged engines to be used from the 2014 Formula 1 season is the most important decision made by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) which will benefit Ferrari as well as other engine
suppliers.
Luca added that Ferrari will remain in Formula 1 as long as the sport represents the true spirit of the Scarlet team’s research centre.
He also proposed that the next step that the FIA should take is to limit the use of aerodynamic equipment in the Formula 1 cars. Luca added that F1 is not about building satellites or airplanes but it is about building Formula 1 cars so the aerodynamics
should be less relevant.
He said, “Today, aerodynamics means 90 per cent of the performance. But I think this is not good because we are not building satellites or airplanes; we're building cars. Aerodynamics has to be less relevant in the performance of the car.”
Further talking about the FIA decision to shift to V6 turbo instead of V4, Luca stated, “I [will] do Formula 1 as long as Formula 1 represents for us the most important research centre. The decision [to go for the] V6 is important because turbo-six is good
for the future, not only for Ferrari but also for Mercedes and others.”
Ferrari were the biggest opposition of the V4 engine rules being proposed by the FIA for the 2013 season. The Scarlet team mentioned that the V4’s will damage the reputation of the Formula 1 sport and they should not be used in the name of cutting down the
cost and environmental issues.
However, now as the FIA has decided to go for V6, Ferrari have agreed to the change and have mentioned that they will remain in Formula 1.
Furthermore, the suggestion of cutting down the aerodynamic capability of the car is still to be addressed and it will be interesting to see how much further the FIA goes in clamping down the department.
