Luca di Montezemolo smells chaos and ambiguity for changed FIA regulations
The Ferrari president, Luca di Montezemolo does not appreciate all the changes that are being introduced in the 2011 Formula One season. The Italian is of the view that some of the changes made in the rules are unnecessary and
will give way to a lot of confusion. However, he admits that some of the modifications made by FIA in the regulations are wisely tailored and will prove useful in making the sport even more exciting.
Among changes made for the upcoming season, the most important one is regarding the rear wing of the car. As per the new rule, drivers can re-adjust the rear wing, while they are at a certain distance behind another car. This will make overtaking easier
for the chasing car. By these modifications in the wing, the drivers can reduce the drag, making overtaking easier especially because the leading car is not allowed to use the device itself when in a defensive position.
The change in the strategy is made to encourage more overtaking moves on the track which excites the race viewers as well as add more drama to the event. However, di Montezemolo is of the view that this is going to increase a lot of controversy on the track
and much disagreement is expected during a race weekend.
The Ferrari president recalls the chaos created back in 2009 with the introduction of double diffuser regulations. Ferrari and some of the other teams were very aggressive as FIA legalised the diffusers used by Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota while many other
teams believed that they were actually breaching the rules.
While talking to the media the Italian said, "As for the rear wing, I hope we start the season with total clarity as regards the regulations. I am not worried about it, but our experience of 2009 still grates.”
Another very prominent change in the regulations for the upcoming season is the re-entrance of the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) to the sport. The system was banned at the start of this season because it was not affordable by many of the teams.
However, Ferrari is happy with its returning as the team utilized more than any other in 2009. Once again di Montezemolo is confident that the team will be able to get maximum benefit by KERS in 2011 as well.
He concluded saying, "We are starting from a solid base. I'm thinking here of the fact that at the end of last year, our energy recovery system was very competitive."
