Luca di Montezemolo wants rapid improvement for Ferrari: Formula 1 News
Ferrari’s boss, Luca di Montezemolo, has asked his team to overcome the issues quickly and get back to the winning ways. The Italian team has been unable to finish on the podium once in the first three races of the Formula 1 2011 season.
Di Montezemolo said, “This cannot and must not be the team's level. It's a very delicate moment. I want Ferrari to be at the level that both we and our fans demand it should be.”
The Italian further added, “I expect our engineers to act with determination and know-how, unleashing the maximum of their capacity to improve the performance of the car in a short time.”
The pre-season tests indicated clearly that the real competition in the on-going season will be amongst the reigning champions Red Bull and Ferrari. Their closest rivals McLaren were far away from being competitive, as they lacked both speed and reliability.
However, there was a serious turn around of events once the season officially kicked off in Australia. The Italian team was no way near their rivals in terms of pace and Red Bull dominated the season opener. Apart from that, McLaren proved to be the second
quickest team, leaving Ferrari with a lot to think.
Ferrari’s driver, Fernando Alonso, didn’t panic after the Australian Grand Prix and claimed that the team would bounce back in the second race of the season, which was held in Malaysia.
Things didn’t turn out to be as expected by the Spaniard and the Maranello based squad was left behind yet again by their rivals. The team blamed its qualifying pace for the lack-lustre start to the season and vowed to be challenging in China.
Things went from bad to worse for Ferrari though, as their drivers Felipe Massa and Alonso were not impressive in both the qualifiers and the race. The team appeared to take one step backwards, as Mercedes drivers, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher were
quicker the on race day.
The young German ended up fifth, ahead of both the Ferraris and they were followed by the seven-time Formula 1 champion Schumacher. Although the veteran driver was unable to overtake the scarlet cars, he was lapping much quicker compared to them.
