Lucas Bjerregaard ready for the Challenge Tour’s challenge
Lucas Bjerregaard is hoping to continue his form at this week’s ECCO Tour Championship hosted by Thomas Björn & Mercedes-Benz at the Stensballegaard Golf Club. The tournament will be held from August 15 to 18, 2012.
The 21-year-old has been enjoying a great form right from the start of the season. So far, he has recorded two victories on the Nordic League along with five top-three finishes.
His stunning finishes this season earned him a top spot in the Order of Merit, which automatically grants him a full-time status for next year’s European Challenge Tour.
He now aims to follow the footsteps of his Dane compatriot Thorbjørn Olesen who has performed brilliantly in different parts of world and made his country proud.
A couple of years ago, Bjerregaard won the European Amateur Championship just like Rory McIlroy did in his amateur career.
He then turned professional and proved his skills on the Nordic League. He will take his next step on the big stage which is the Challenge Tour.
As a matter of fact, he is going in the right direction so far and has the potential of leaving a positive impact in each of the tour he enters.
When he won the European Amateur Championship, he received an invitation to play The Open Championship in 2011.
Despite the fact that he failed to make the cut in the third major championship of the year, he proved his worth at the Nordea Masters on the European Tour, when he tied for the 45th position in his debut appearance.
He is now expecting a tough challenge when he will tee off for the first time on the Challenge Tour this week in Denmark.
“I know the level of competition on the Challenge Tour is very high. There are so many good players out here, and some of them have competed at this level – or even higher – for many years now,” he said. “So you have to play really well to finish near the
top of the leaderboard on the Challenge Tour”.
“I’m really looking forward to playing with Nick Dougherty for the first two rounds,” he added. “He has won three times on The European Tour and I’ve seen him on TV many times, so it’s nice to be playing with someone like him”.
