Liverpool midfielder, Lucas Leiva, has been awarded the club’s Best Player of the Season award for the belligerent performances he has put in the recently concluded 2010/11 season. Being rewarded with such a prestigious reward hardly comes as a surprise.
The Brazilian was voted by none other than the club’s supporters. In spite of Liverpool’s failure to book a place in the European football, finishing sixth in the recently concluded 2010/11 Barclays Premier League, Leiva’s standout performances have made him
a fan favourite at Anfield.
The Brazilian International stole the award, having won the Best Player of the Season award by comprehensively beating the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dirk-Kuyt-c11348, who were among the contenders for this award.
The Fans gave him majority of the votes. The 24-year-old won 40 percent of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 votes, while Dirk Kuyt came a distant second with 25 percent of the fans gunning for him. Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, whose future seems uncertain and has been the subject of
transfer rumours, secured 10 percent of the fans’ votes.
Liverpool’s desperate efforts of hanging on to their midfielder of the season, Lucas Leiva, have paid off; the Brazilian has penned a new two-year contract extension with Kenny Dalglish’s men, which will keep him at Anfield until the summers of 2016. Having
played most of the season as a first-team regular, Leiva went on to make 47 appearances for the Reds this season.
The 24-year-old expressed extreme gratitude over the appreciation given by the Club for his consistent performances throughout the season.  He said;
“I am very happy and really proud to have been picked by the fans. It shows they really appreciate the work I am doing for the team and I will remain the same - always giving 100 per cent in every single game and trying to achieve good things for this club,
where I feel really good and want to be a winner.”
The former Gremio player considers the recently concluded season to be toughest of the four campaigns he has completed with Liverpool, and believes that the tough times have helped him emerge as an improved player.
“I think I am improving every single season, but of course this season has been special as an individual for me because I played with consistency. That's what I was looking for in the previous seasons. I am really happy with the way I played and difficult
times just made me stronger and stronger” Leiva added.
Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, thinks that they have the squad to challenge Manchester United for the English Premier League title next season.
