Lucas Martin Matthysse nails Humberto Soto in fifth round via knockout - Boxing News
Lucas Martin Matthysse, the WBA Inter-Continental light welterweight champion, outwitted his Saturday night opponent, Humberto Soto, the former WBC lightweight champion, to grab a fifth round knockout win, in a 12-round bout held on June
23, 2012.
The bout co-headlined the fight card and was for the vacant WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title. The showdown was organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and was televised live on Showtime’s weekly Saturday night
boxing show.
In addition to the above classic bout, the showdown was headlined by the WBC silver welterweight title clash between Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez. The ring for the extravaganza was set up at Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, United States.
Even before the bout, the odd-makers were in favour of Soto, who was held a hefty 15-bout win streak. Humberto, started things off in his usual style that is analysing Lucas and circling the ring while finding appropriate spots to connect his powerful jabs.
In the second round, things started to get a bit nasty as Lucas started to drill his way through Soto’s solid defence. Humberto strived hard to evade the young Argentinean’s but his efforts simply went in vain.
The first two rounds though were won by Soto yet he was unable to maintain his pace as a result the scenario took a sharp twist from third round and onwards. The third and fourth rounds witnessed Lucas attack Soto with all his force.
Martin did not halt himself and unleashed a wave of jabs that connected an inflicted substantial damage to Soto’s body and face. After taking a continuous stiff beating Soto did manage to come back but in the last few seconds of the fourth round.
During the fifth round, Lucas completely dominated the veteran by his agility, footwork and impressive pugilism. Soto, who was stunned by the early beating, seemed to have lost all his gas and was just at the receiving end absorbing Lucas’ jabs helplessly.
Lucas eyeballed Soto and threw a beautiful combination of left-right hooks that connected well and blanked out the Mexican proud. Soto did break the 10-count but was unable to keep his senses intact as a result after the ring of the bell, with teammates
consultation, Soto decided to pull out of the bout.
After the huge win, Lucas stated, “With my team we worked hard, trained hard, we knew we had to win by knockout. This is the best one [performance] because this didn’t go to the judges. [In my next fight] I just want the opportunity to fight whoever.”
For Martin the win is definitely a career-boosting one but as far as Soto is concerned he needs to revamp his game plan in order to cross the 60-win milestone. Soto now has 58 wins and eight losses whereas Lucas has collected his 31st win.
