Lucchese takes ERG down by six goals in 2011 Bombardier Pacific coast Open: 16-10
It is not an easy task for any line-up to send Adolfo Cambiaso-led Lucchese out of the 2011 Bombardier Pacific coast Open, as it is an uncouth initiation for those who are thinking in this way. The Lucchese team took the endowed ERG down by six goals, 16-10
in the second encounter held at the Santa Barbara Polo Club.
Adolfo Cambiaso, who is still one of the world’s best polo pros, scored eleven times and rendered a match-winning performance. Both the ERG and Lucchese were flying high when they entered in the field.
Though the foursome of ERG obtained only a single goal in the first three sets of play, it was the opening goal of the competition. Sebastian Merlos converted a sixty yard long penalty shot and put his side ahead on the scorecard. The maiden goal not only
ignited the Lucchese players but forced them to show an aggressive style of play. Veteran Cambiaso scored four goals of which three were taken on penalty shots in response of the solitary goal from ERG. In the later period, Jeff Blake converted a penalty shot
and closed out the first round with Lucchese sitting at top, 5-1.
The second frame belonged to Lucchese with obtained three more notches while holding opponent goalless in the period. Cambiaso was hero of the period and accomplished all the actions in the seven and half minutes of play. He scored three goals of which two
were taken through penalty conversions and another from the field effort. The tight defensive line of Lucchese while holding ERG scoreless concluded the action at 8-1.
In an unprecedented move, the Lucchese team did not allow their opponent ERG to make an addition onto the scoreboard in the third set of play. On the other hand, the Lucchese attackers managed three more and finished the first half action at an 11-1 mark.
At last the players from ERG side came into action but could score only two goals. Blake and Julio Gracida of Lucchese marked a couple of goals which were countered by two goals in the hands of Paco de Narvaez and Miguel Torres. Cambiaso did not forget to
play his role in the scoring and took the score to an insurmountable eleven goals.
The fifth set of play was opened by a single goal from Narvaez which was countered by two penalty conversions from Cambiaso. However, the ERG players including Torres, Merlos and Narvaez added one score and reduced the lead down to nine.
The Lucchese team did not make effort in attacking front and rested in the final chukka. On the other hand, Torres, Narvaez and Merlos accounted for one goal apiece and lost the match at 16-10.
