Former Olympique de Marseille midfielder, Lucho Gonzalez, is clearly relieved at being able to secure a move to Portuguese side FC Porto where he actually started his European adventure. At Porto, the Argentine is more liberated.
Since leaving Marseille for free this January, Gonzalez has not been chatty about the reasons that forced him to leave the Rhone club. Criticised from all sections of the ground, the Argentine endure a torrid start of the campaign with Les Phoceens.
Eventually, Gonzalez was confined to the bench as Didier Deschamps lost faith in a player whom he signed for a lot of money just a few years back.
While talking to RMC about his time at Marseille, the Argentine looked back at things that he achieved at the club.
“Yes, there was criticism but I prefer to remember everything that I won with OM. In two and a half years, we were able to win five trophies.”
During Gonzalez’s stay, Les Phoceens won one Ligue 1 trophy, 2 league cups and 2 Trophee des Champions.
The South American has certainly got no grudges against his former employers. However, Gonzalez did point out a few things that forced him to bid farewell to the Ligue 1 side.
Reports claim that the home jacking that occurred at his home a few years ago, was the main reason behind Gonzalez’s departure. However, the Porto player refused this. Gonzalez did however indicated something about broken promises.
“There was a new project, but a year later, it was no longer the same. The departure of our captain (Heinze) was not imaginable,” says Gonzalez.
Gonzalez also said that the team’s vision was another reason why he was forced to leave the club.
“At first we were going in the same direction. But over time, our vision of football was no longer the same. Am I disappointed at Deschamps? No. I recall that 98% of the reason why I went to Marseille was due to the fact that I would play under him.”
However, Gonzalez says that he still feels like a 20-year-old player who has a lot to prove during his time at Marseille which is the reason why he never realised his full potential at the Canebiere.
