Lucie Hradecka dumps Zuzuna Ondraskova at Whirlpool Monterrey Open
Czech Lucie Hradecka downs her compatriot Zuzuna Ondraskova in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open on Tuesday. She registered a 6-2, 6-2 win to advance in the event.
World ranked 83rd, Hradecka has so far won 9 out of her last 10 matches in the season. Though she was ousted in the first round at Australian Open, she won the Midland ITF after defeating Irina Falconi in straight sets.
She exited in the semi-finals at Memphis. A qualifier here, she overpowered Russian Anastasia Pivovarova, British Heather Watson and American Jamie Hampton to gain acceptance in the main draw.
Both Czech stars displayed amazing skills at the start of the opening set. The 25-year-old Hradecka held her opening serve in the first game. Ondraskova quickly counterattacked and held her serve in the following game. But after
this, Hradecka outplayed her compatriot by breaking serve three times to clinch the set with a 6-2 score line. Ondraskova converted one opportunity to her advantage and had a higher first serve percentage but the youngster registered an amazing 80 percent
win on her first serve.
Hradecka kept her winning momentum from the first set as she held her opening serve in the second set. She then went on to win the set with a similar score line of 6-2. She fired four aces, saved two break points and registered
an acceptable first serve percentage of 62 percent as opposed to Ondraskova’s slightly higher 65 percent. However, she earned an impressive 81 percent win on it. Her compatriot on the other hand hammered three aces and saved a break point but it wasn’t enough
to hold Hradecka back.
Winning this match, Hradecka has levelled her head to head series by 3-3 against her compatriot.
On another court, Belarusian Olga Govortsova defeated Czech Renata Voracova by a score line of 6-3, 6-1.
World number 85, Govortsova hasn’t had much luck this season, so far. She exited from the first round at the Australian Open, at Memphis and Acapulco. But after winning this match, the Belarusian not only extended her head to head
lead against the Czech to 3-0 but also advanced to her first second round appearance this season.
The higher ranked Belarusian committed 6 double faults and had a first serve percentage of 53 percent to Voracova’s 60 percent. But she clinched the match in straight sets by firing 3 ferocious aces, converting all six opportunities
to her advantage and registering an amazing 58 percent wins on her first serve. The Czech on the other hand, tried to hold the raging Belarusian back but only managed to break Govortsova’s serve twice.
She will next be facing Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, who reached this spot after overwhelming a seeded player, in the second round.
