Lucie Safarova defeats Jarmila Gajdosova; breezes into quarters of the Mutua Madrid Open
World number thirty-two Czech Lucie Safarova downed world number thirty-one Australian Jarmila Gajdosova in straight sets on Thursday. Safarova registered a 6-3, 6-3 win over her fellow 24-year-old veteran rival to advance into
the quarterfinals of the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open, a clay court tournament held in Spain.
The Czech hasn’t had much progress this season so far but she showed her awe-inspiring skills at Kuala Lumpur where she reached the final. She entered Park Manzanares confidently and overpowered Spanish wild card Anabel Medina
Garrigues and seventh seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic in three sets in the first two rounds. Safarova then triumphed over Gajdosova in sixty-four minutes to book a semi-final spot.
She stormed into the first round and held her serve in the first game through massive forehands from her arsenal of skills. The Czech produced a much better first serve share of 75 percent as compared to Gajdosova’s 56 percent
and registered an amazing 80 percent win on it. Although she failed to save the only breakpoint faced, Safarova converted three out of nine breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to seal the set by winning six games to three.
The Czech kept her momentum rolling into the final set and held her serve in the first game plausibly. She registered a fascinating 95 percent win on her higher first serve share. Safarova saved the only breakpoint faced and converted
the only breakpoint opportunity to her advantage to clinch the set with a 6-3 win.
Safarova will next face fourth seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka who trashed Spanish wild card enterer Arantxa Parra Santonja with a bagel in sixty-two minutes. She converted seven out of thirteen breakpoint opportunities to
clinch the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory later that day.
Other contestants who advanced into the quarters were; Julia Goerges who upset top seed Caroline Wozniacki, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who stunned fifth seed Samantha Stosur, Bethanie Mattek-Sands who triumphed over third seed Francesca
Schiavone and sixth seed Na Li who rallied past Roberta Vinci.
