Lucie Safarova strains past Aleksandra Wozniak in the third round – Family Circle Cup 2012
World number 26, Lucie Safarova, was tested rigorously by the Canadian tennis ace, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the third round of the Family Circle Cup. Both players fought for two hours and 20 minutes and finally the 25-years-old Czech
grabbed the win 6-2, 6(4)-7, 6-1.
Former world number 21, Wozniak, was playing third match against the ninth seed Safarova having shared the results of the first two matches equally. However, she failed to start the match on a high-note; lost the opening serve
game and went down 2-0 in the meantime.
She tried to make a comeback but another onslaught in the seventh game from the Czech piled up on the trail. The Canadian only won a couple of more points before the Czech grabbed the first set with ease.
The second set was a complete text book battle. No player dropped any game on their serves despite being pressurized by their opponents. A tie-breaker round was enforced to decide the set. The 24-years-old Canadian clinched a close
win and deprived her opponent from a straight set triumph.
However, the final set was completely hijacked by the Czech who just dropped one game on her way to another monumental victory in 2012. She broke serve twice on the trot and registered a respectable first and second serve conversion
rate.
At the end it was just a difference of 13 points that separated the winner from the loser. The ninth seed Czech won 105 points that included eight aces. Her competitor clasped 92 points including six thumping aces. The breakpoint
conversion rate for the Canadian was terrible. She was not able to convert any the allotted eight opportunities whilst her rival translated four out of six breakpoints in her favour.
Lucie Safarova will lock horns with the fourth seed Russian starlet, Vera Zvonareva, in the quarter-final of the tournament. The Russian defeated the in-form qualifier from Switzerland, Stefanie Voegele, in straight sets. Safarova
will have to come up with a plan to defeat the Russian who has recently been struggling from niggling injuries. If she stays fit, it should be an easy victory for the Russian.
