Luck at odds with Ben Spies – MotoGP Special
Ben Spies is struggling through the dark of shadows of luck currently as he has not been able to finish the last three races at Czech Republic Grand Prix, Indianapolis Grand Prix and United States Grand Prix.
He currently stands at 10th position in the championship with 66 points.
Spies has also announced that he will not be continuing with Yamaha Factory Racing in the next 2013 season and has not disclosed any news about his next contract, until now. He made this announcement on the eve of United States Grand Prix at Laguna Seca
on July 26, 2012. An interesting fact to notice is that he has been unable to finish any grand prix he has started, after breaking the news related to his separation from Yamaha.
Let us go a few months back when he announced that he will be focussing on his riding, getting out of the news related to his departure from Yamaha.
At Laguna Seca he faced a technical failure in his swingarm, which left him struggling with the grip of the bike and later resulted in a crash.
In the very next race at Indianapolis Grand Prix he struggled from some technical issues with the engine and it blew up.
The following race at the Brno circuit proved to be unlucky for Spies as his clutch started heating up and took over two laps to cool down to perform at its 100%. After his comeback over the circuit he tried to get most out of his bike and in trying so,
he crashed.
All the unfortunate incidents raise some questions in our mind which we were unable to answer, until now. We think why it is always the bike struggling for the luck of the American rider. Another question which may come in one’s mind is why it is always
related to the technical issues, why is his team doing its job inefficiently.
It is a known fact that the bikes are closely monitored by the team when they are ridden and a lot of technical data is recorded which is later used to improve the performance of both the bike and the rider.
After the announcement of the American rider it could have been expected that the rider will try his best to show impressive results with his bike to attain a good bargaining position for his next 2013 contract. It can be noticed from Spies’ driving that
he is trying to push hard with his bike but it is not the factor resulting in his crashes as all of his crashes are backed by some technical issues and he crashed trying to cater to those issues.
As it has been announced by the American that he will not be riding for Yamaha in the following 2013 season, he had nothing much to do at the practice session. He worked on improving the grip of the bike and surprisingly during the race simulation at the
second day of privately conducted Aragon test they had nothing much to change and the bike did not create any problem, rather they concluded their test session with some fine tuning and nothing significant.
Let’s see how the upcoming Italian Grand Prix scheduled the next week on September 16, 2012 turns out to be for the American rider. Will he be able to make it to the finish line or his ‘luck’ will be blamed once again, something only time can tell.
