Lucky Kristale shocks rivals to claim Duchess of Cambridge Stakes – Horseracing News
Lucky Kristale shocked her rivals in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes sponsored by Betfred (Group 2) at Newmarket in England on Friday, July 12, 2013.
Despite being given a general starting price of 20 to 1, the young filly did not take any pressure at all and stormed to the top of the table with ease. She was up against some extremely good challengers, but did not allow anyone
of them to come closer in the class-1 encounter.
Looking at the start of Lucky Kristale, no one can say that she would have finished on top of the table comfortably. She was held up by some of the slow runners, which was not ideal at all, especially with the overall distance
to cover being only six furlongs.
Despite all the problems and pressure, the two-year-old filly responded well to the situation and quickened over two furlongs. She started making up places as the race progressed and was looking threatening, entering the final
stages. Once she got into the lead, there was no stopping her, as she ended up more than a couple of lengths clear of the runner up.
After Lucky Kristale failed to deliver a strong result at the Royal Ascot, no one could have expected a strong show from her at Newmarket. However, she has proved that she has got strong nerves and can take on some tough challenges
at the highest level.
According to the winning jockey Tom Queally, “She did it very well. I was content to take a sit because they went fast in the Albany and she was to the fore. George said take your time and use her turn of foot. She's got scope
to improve and has plenty of speed.”
On the other hand, Rizeena disappointed her team by finishing second overall, after being rated as the favourite to win. Her trainer Clive Brittain, “She was lugging to the left and didn't show that burst of speed we know she has.
It wasn't the ground, she just lacked that spark. To her credit she never gave in. The Moyglare wouldn't be out of it as she was staying on again.”
However, Brittain praised the winning filly and said that all credit should be given to her for a splendid show.
