Lucy Garner takes gold medal in Junior road race at UCI World Championships 2011 – Cycling Update
Lucy Garner of Great Britain sprinted out a superb victory to claim the gold medal in the Junior Women’s road race at the UCI World Championships 2011 in Rudersdal on Friday, September, 23.
Garner was very happy with her performance and in the final kilometres, the entire team worked really hard to help her cross the finish line with a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes and 17 seconds to cover the distance of 70 kilometres.
Garner said, "The team worked really hard and I couldn’t have asked for more from the team. They put in early attacks and I was just trying to keep sheltered during the whole race. On the last lap there were still two riders away but I did try and give it
a go but it all came back together."
After crashing, blood streamed from her left knee but Garner continued her effort and pulled away from eighth place in the field and managed to gain a lead to cross the finish line first.
In the last corner, Garner knew that she was able to catch the group and when the sprint became pretty fast then Garner and two other cyclists including, Mieke Krüger and Rossella Ratto were working hard and gained a lead of 21 seconds.
However, the race was characterised with numerous attacks as the cyclists tried their luck until the final kilometers. However, the team of Great Britain was highly active and due to this Garner crossed the finish line without any difficulty.
She further added, "At the bottom of the hill a few riders did go and I just tried to sit in because I knew that if I went early on the sprint I would blow."
Jessy Druyts (Belgium) was in second place and Christina Siggaard (Denmark) finished third with the same timing of Sprinter. Thalita De Jong (Netherlands) was in 39th place with a difference of 9 seconds. Seven cyclists including, Jenny Rissveds,
Allison Beveridge and Jessica Allen did not finish the race.
The next Junior Men’s road race will start in Rudersdal as all the cyclists will cover the distance of 126 kilometres.
