Hi there, I'm Italian and next year I'll be in the Us. I've read somewhere that I have to leave my luggage open for a check.

Is this true?

  1. yes

  2. I think that you are referring to locking your bag - is this correct?  You can lock your check-in bags but it is recommended that you use one of the locks that customs can open.  Otherwise, if they want to open a bag that is locked with an ordinary lock, they will break the lock.

  3. The entry process for the USA is similar to the process in Europe.

Exit the aircraft and go to Immigration/passport control. Then go to baggage claim and collect your suitcases. Take your suitcases to the US Customs checkpoint and give the officer the arrivals form you completed on the plane. Your bags have to be unlocked, but can stay closed (and on the luggage cart if you use one). They won't be searched unless Customs has some reason to do so.  Customs may randomly search incoming travelers but I have never seen that.

Once through Customs either exit the airport (if it's your destination) or give your suitcases to Interline Baggage (a short distance past Customs)  for transfer to your continuing flight.

Hope you have a good trip!
