Luis Angel Mate Mardones wins fourth stage and Vasili Kiryienka takes overall lead in 2011 Route Du Sud
Cofidis, Le Credit En Ligne team's Luis Angel Mate Mardones won the fourth stage of 2011 Route du Sud on Sunday, June 19. Vasili Kiryienka maintained his overall leader's yellow jersey.
The race started in lzaourt and ended in Pau. The Spanish rider took a total of 3 hours, 19 minutes and 39 seconds to cover the distance of 143 kilometres.
Simon Geschke of Skil-Shimano was the runnner-up and Steve Houanard of AG2R La Mondiale finished third.
Enrique Sanz of Movistar was in good form and tried his best to catch the group of five riders, but he failed and gained the sixth spot with a difference of 27 seconds.
Matthieu Ladagnous of FDJ, Stefan Van Dijk of Veranda's Willems - Accent and Mitchell Docker of Skil - Shimano were in seventh, eighth and ninth place respectively.
Lars Petter of Sky Procycling attacked, but he was not able to maintain his pace and took the 70th spot with a difference of 46 seconds.One rider from Big Mat-Auber 93 team, Sylvain Georges, was disqualified from the stage.
A group of four riders made their first breakaway which included, Luis Angel Mate Mardones, Mitchell Docker (Skil - Shimano), Simon Geschke and Steve Houanard (AG2R La Mondiale). All of them gained a lead of a few seconds over the peloton.
After a few kilometres from the start of the race, Mitchell Docker worked hard for his team-mate, Simon, while Steve Houanard attacked the peloton, but he failed. Luis increased his pace and with help of his teammate he crossed the finsih-line ahead of other cyclists.
Third stage winner, Jurgen Van Goolen of the Veranada's Willems-Accent team, was unable to maintain his lead and grabbed the 34th spot ahead of Francisco Perez Sanchez (Movistar) and Antonio Piedra Perez (Andalucia Caja Granada).
Second stage winner, Anthony Charteau of Europcar, was in the 50th spot, ahead of Jose Luis Roldan Carmona (Andalucia Caja Granada).
Vasili Kiryienka of Movistar retained his overall standing with a timing of 19 hours, 12 minutes and 36 seconds. Davide Rebellin of Miche-Guerciotti was in the second spot with 40 seconds behind Vasili.
Recently, the 29-year-old Vasili took the overall second spot in Criterium International and took the second stage of Tour of the Basque Country. He also grabbed the 20th place in Giro d'ltalia.
Peter Kennaugh of Sky Procycling finished third with a difference of 43 seconds while Luis Angel was in 72nd place with a difference of 44 minutes and 49 seconds.
