Luis Fabiano and the Year 2010 – Spanish La Liga debate
Who would have though Luis Fabiano would be back at Sao Paulo at 30 years of age? Chosen to lead the Selecao in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the striker scored 3 goals in the competition. The successful outing with the national team meant there would be suitors
outside his abode in Sevilla. Nothing went as planned and the prolific striker was shipped back to native http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858.
Sevilla finished 4th in the 2009/10 La Liga campaign, qualifying for the next edition of UEFA Champions League. Fabiano scored an impressive 21 goals in 34 matches and was scouted by the top clubs. Manchester United wanted him, AC Milan wanted
him, Juventus wanted him, Tottenham were crazy about him and things were only supposed to get better.
Things change rapidly in football, and this is the gist of Fabiano’s year. From one of the most revered strikers in Europe to a has-been, the Brazilian’s story is short and simple. The player has been marred by injuries, he kept making the wrong noises in
the locker room, and the 43-times capped international was shown the door.
Fabiano signed for Sao Paulo in a deal worth 7.6 million Euros. Tottenham were ready to give over 20 million Euros for the thirty-year old and Sevilla were not ready to sell him. It took only 40 days for the club to realize that keeping the veteran of six
seasons in Spain was not the smartest of moves. He had his heart set somewhere else. The Brazilian shores awaited him.
It was a hard pill for Juventus to swallow. They had been in the running to sign the prolific striker, and were priced out of his signature in the January window only to see him leave for much less than what they were willing to give.
Tottenham seem to have the bitter feelings for the Seville-based club for the same reason. Without a champion striker in their ranks, the team won the UEFA Champions League qualification the previous year, but were unable to repeat the heroics.
Calling an end to his time at Sevilla must have been a hard step for the beleaguered striker. After amassing a goal-return of nearly a-goal every other game, the striker returned to his old hunting ground.
Fabiano had his best years at Sevilla and should have left for pastures new in the 2010 summer transfer window, or the one before that. His days in top-flight were numbered as he struggled for form and fitness.
The once in-demand striker has his best days behind him, and his ship to Europe’s big clubs has sailed. His exploits in the UEFA Cup of 2005/06 and in the corresponding edition of the tournament will live forever in the hearts of Sevilla supporters. He opened
the scoring in the final in Eindhoven, and his cup lifting memories will forever be cherished by the loving fans.
Fabiano scored 10 goals in the 21 outings he made in his last campaign with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sevilla-FC-c40484. He had recently signed a contract extension which would hold him to Seville-based club until June 2013. The abrupt ending to his trophy-laden career at Sevilla is a
mystery. Perhaps it was the constant battle against injuries, loss of form or the inability to move to a bigger club in Europe that made the front man call an end to his stay in Europe. Whatever the reason for his departure, the 6-feet tall striker has etched
his name in the hearts of the clubs supporters and will always be loved.
