Luis Fabiano pens new Sevilla deal
Tottenham target Luis Fabiano has all but ended the summer long pursuit for his signature by penning a contract extension with current club Sevilla. The Brazilian forward has been subject to transfer speculation since the end of the World Cup last month, with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp apparently keen on the 29-year-old.
French club Marseille were also known admirers but neither club could agree terms with Sevilla, leading Fabiano to end the saga once and for all. Reports had suggested that the Brazilian was looking to leave the club, especially after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Portuguese side Braga last week. That result led Redknapp to up the ante in order to land the highly-rated forward, but an asking price of around £15m was enough to put the former Portsmouth manager off.
Fabiano’s contract extension runs until 2013, when you’d expect his career to be winding down. Seville has become a like a second home to the Brazilian, with him entering his sixth season with the club. In that time he was part of Juande Ramos’ hugely successful era in which he won two UEFA Cups and a Copa del Rey, as well as an excellent third place finish in La Liga. He was also part of the team that won the Copa del Rey last season and went on to finish fourth in the table.
In the wake of signing his contract extension, he spoke of his affection for the club: “Sevilla have given me everything. When I came here people did not believe in me much, but here I have won many titles.” He went on to state that he had “turned down many offers because many teams were interested,” but his heart told him to stay in Seville. He may have no Champions League football to look forward to this year, but he’ll certainly have the adoration of all Sevilla fans.
