Luis Mendoza shines as Kansas City Royals defeat Detroit Tigers 10-2 - MLB Update

Kansas City Royals’ starting pitcher, Luis Mendoza had a notable day with the ball as he pitched seven innings and struck-out three batters with an ERA of 1.29 in the Royals’ 10-2 win against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City on September
20.
Alex Gordon struck a solo homer towards centre-field to give the Royals an initial 1-0 lead during the first inning. The batters were unsteady to play scoring shots in the second and third inning. Jhonny Peralta and Andy Dirks both struck-out without any
run during second inning while Alex Avila ground out. Similarly, Gordon walked at the bottom of the third inning but Melky Cabrera ground out to the pitcher and Eric Hosmer got out at second base.
Royals continued to extend their lead as they blasted six runs at the bottom of fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Salvador Perez drove a single-run shot towards left-field and Johnny Giavotella scored the first run. Mitch Maier posted the second run when
Alcides Escobar hit a single-run drive to left-field.
Cabrera also singled off centre-field during the fourth inning and Perez posted one run. Hosmer struck a three-run homer towards left-field while Escobar and Cabrera both contributed two collective runs to end the six-run campaign for the Royals. In the
fifth inning, Tigers scored their initial run when Austin Jackson drove a double-run shot to deep left-centre and Dirks added the first run.
At the bottom of the fifth inning, Perez hit a two-run homer towards right-field and Maier scored a single run to give the Royals a 9-1 lead. Mendoza permitted three walks, six hits, two runs and one earned run on his 102 pitches.
Tigers reduced their lead 9-2 in the seventh inning when Delmon Young hit a sacrifice fly towards right-field and Ramon Santiago scored one run. Royals advanced their lead 10-2 at the bottom of eighth inning when Cabrera added the final run on the drive
of Jeff Francoeur to left-centre. Hosmer moved to second base to end the eighth inning.
As a result, Royals were on top with 1-0 lead in a two-game series at Kansas City.
