Luisao equals Antonio Veloso's European record for Benfica – Liga Sagres News
Benfica skipper and Brazilian International, Luisao, continues his rise to greatness by setting another record, this time equalling the club’s all time record for European games, which was previously held by Antonio Veloso.
Luisao joined the club in 2003 after making the switch from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cruzeiro-c38870. Since his arrival, he has become one the best defenders in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Using his vast experience and lanky body as the main weapons in his artillery, the Brazilian International has been able to command his penalty area with uncommon ease and has dealt with aerial bombardment without breaking a sweat.
Earlier, the 32-year-old made his 300th appearance for the Eagles, a feat he bettered when he crossed the record held for the most outings in Benfica colours for a non-Portuguese player.
Although now basking in the glory of a draw against English Premier League champions, Manchester United, and enjoying the last of his playing years, the summer proved to be quite turbulent for the centre-back.
On the radar of big-spending Paris Saint-Germain, Luisao himself made the headlines when he sensationally announced that he would be willing to negotiate with the French outfit for a possible transfer.
With money being no problem for the Parisians, many expected the Selecao International to be playing in the French league this season, however, he decided against the switch and committed his future to the Reds, much to the delight the fans and coaches alike.
After signing another contract to extend his stay at Estadio da Luz until at least 2016, Luisao, said that he would hang up his playing boots at the helm and will remain a Benfica fan for the rest of his life.
Last night against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, the Brazilian toppled the record books when he equalled former Antonio Veloso’s long-time record for most appearances made by a player for Benfica. The feat is even more impressive considering Luisao took only
8 years to equal the record, while Veloso took 15.
With age now taking its toll, Luisao will not be able to play forever, however, it is certain that his endeavours for the Portuguese giants will be held in high regard by the club faithful.
