Luka Gregorc slays Jordan Cox in the qualifying competition – 2012 Men’s Rimouski Challenger
Qualifying fifth seed, Luka Gregorc, drilled through the American rising star, Jordan Cox, with a breadstick at the 2012 Men’s Rimouski Challenger on Sunday. He formulated a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the 20-year-old to book a spot in the final round of the
qualifying competition in Rimouski, Canada.
Ranked 495th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Gregorc smashed seven aces to pull out the victory in straight sets in 65 minutes. He held his entire serves easily and broke Cox’s serve
four times to earn the limelight.
Gregorc drew the first blood in the third game and then kept remaining serves to seal the opener with a 6-4 win. The Slovene dusted away all four breakpoints he faced and converted one out of two break opportunities to dominate.
The Slovenian veteran kept his momentum from the first set into the following set and got the critical break in the opening game, consequently leaping to a 2-0 lead early on. After the American held his serve in the third game, Gregorc unleashed slices to
go on a four-game rampage, winning the set with an assuring 6-1 score line.
Summing up the 28-year-old’s performance, the Slovene manipulated a slightly better first serve share of 62 per cent in contrast with Cox’s 60 per cent but amazingly clinched 27 out of 34 points on it. He also earned a better share on his returns and finished
the match with 63 points.
The American rising star, Nikita Kryvonos, will accompany the fifth seed in the following round. The American hammered eight aces and ended the match with 101 points to outsmart Maximilian Wilde.
Kryvonos lost his serve twice but converted three out of five break chances to seal the opener by winning seven games to five. He swayed from his track in the second set after failing to defend the lone breakpoint he came across, eventually equalising the
set scores. However, the 25-year-old re-gathered his strength in the final set and after capitalising on one out of four break chances, he capped the set with a 6-4 victory.
