Despite the statement by the Tottenham Hotspur chairman claiming midfielder Luka Modric was not for sale to anyone, for any amount of money, the Croatian international will end up at Chelsea during the summer transfer window.
Why? Because Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich always gets what he wants. The transfer might take time and could possibly cost the Blues more than their initial bid of £22 million, but Luka Modric will complete his dream move to Stamford Bridge.
The player made his desire to move to the London rivals clear, claiming he did not want to hand in a transfer request due to his respect for the supporters at White Hart Lane. The Spurs boss Harry Redknapp seems to be making the most of it, claiming he would
not let the 25-year-old leave the club under any circumstance.
However, as we have previously witnessed at Chelsea, the Russian billionaire usually ends up acquiring whichever player he has his eyes on. The most recent example was former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 forward Fernando Torres, signed by the Blues on the deadline day of the
January transfer window for a record breaking fee of £50 million.
Even though Liverpool were determined not to let the 27-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 international leave Anfield during the winter transfer, going as far as rejecting his transfer request. However, Chelsea, under the instructions of Abramovich, made an offer the Reds
could not refuse.
The same was the case with Andriy Shevchenko, the Ukrainian striker Abramovich signed from Serie A giants AC Milan for an astronomical fee of £30.8 million. The player himself revealed his move to the London club was mostly because of the Blues owner, who
had managed to convince him to complete the move.
If the examples of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andriy-Shevchenko-c6014 are not proof enough, one could always look at the reign of Guus Hiddink as caretaker manager of Chelsea during the latter part of the 2008-2009 season, while he was still managing the Russian national
team.
Abramovich managed to convince the Dutch manager to take up the manager’s post at Stamford Bridge, after he had sacked Luiz http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Felipe-c13510 Scolari, for the remainder of the season. Hiddink agreed and led an out of form Chelsea to an FA Cup finish.
Now Abramovich is determined to bring Modric to the London club in this summer’s transfer window, having had his eye on the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international since 2007, while the playmaker was still with Dinamo Zagreb. A source close to the club had revealed, “Abramovich
is ready to pay for every one of Modric's kilos.”
Modric did not make a move that season but in the summer of 2008 transferred to Tottenham Hotspur for a club record breaking fee of £16.5 million. While he not a goal scoring midfielder, Modric is an otherwise solid player who has managed to cement his place
in the Spurs starting line-up since he arrived at the club three years ago.
With the plan already set in motion with the initial bid, it is now only a matter of time before Abramovich convinces Tottenham to part ways with their prized midfielder. Chelsea are expected to make an improved bid of £30-35 million to commence their transfers
for the summer transfer window.
