Lukas Lacko stuns Donald Young to reach the third round – Australian Open 2012
Slovak tennis icon, Lucas Lacko, stunned all the followers of tennis around the globe with a comprehensive win over the superior ranked American, Donald Young, in the second round of the Australian Open. The match ended up
with a cumulative scores of 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in favour of the Slovak. He was extremely glad to have his revenge of the defeat in the US Open Grand Slam last year.
Young entered the last year’s US Open as a wildcard entrant and nailed down the lucky loser, Lacko, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, almost five months ago. Lacko, with all the factors running against his favour, managed to
pull up a major upset of the year’s first Grand Slam. Bulk of the arena was filled with the Americans, who flew all the way to Australia to support their tennis prodigy but they were left dejected by the substandard performance of their hero.
Both players held their serves in the first two games before the inferior ranked Slovak broke serve to take lead. Lacko continued his aggression and dominating game play to marshal the proceedings in his favour. He broke
again in the ninth game to round off the first set.
Second set was completely hijacked by the Slovak, as he hammered his opponent on his own serves. Young looked a minnow in front of 116th ranked Slovak. World number 42, Young, trailed with five games in the second
set that were practically unrecoverable at that stage. Sparing just one game for Young, the Slovak bagged the second set with ease.
Young pulled one set back with an improved performance. Lacko failed to find any break to his name but his opponent successfully broke serve in the fourth game to take the lead that lasted till the end of the set. It was
relatively an improved performance but the momentum was still with the low ranked Slovak. Last set was played cautiously by both players apart from the first lapse of concentration from the American that cost him the serve game. The initial lead for the Slovak
was good enough to win him the berth in the third round of the contest.
