Lukas Rosol shocks Marcel Granollers to reach the third round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
Czech rising star, Lukas Rosol, jolted down the 24th seed, Marcel Granollers, after hitting back from a set down at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Friday. He formulated a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Barcelona native to secure a spot in the
third round at this hard court tournament taking place from 19th March to 1st April.
Rosol showed his best tennis to make an epic comeback stunning the world number 24 in their first encounter. After earning the spotlight in one hour and 55 minutes, the Czech assertively advanced into the round of 32 at this Masters 1000 event taking place
at Key Biscayne, Miami.
The 25-year-old enthusiastically stepped on the Floridian hard courts and kept his serve in the second game to square the scores at 1-1. After the Czech held his serve in the third game, Granollers showed his class and went on a five-game rampage, subsequently
bagging the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 83rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Rosol re-focused into the proceeding set and after earning the coveted break in the fourth game, he cruised to a 4-1 lead. The Czech then swiped in remaining serves and clinched
the equaliser with a 6-3 score line.
Rosol went berserk in the final set which matter the most. He fired massive groundstrokes to wipe out the opening four games in a row before the Spaniard could hold on. The Czech then broke Granoller’s serve for a third time in the last game to pull out
the decider with a breadstick.
Overall, the 26-year-old blocked six out of eight breakpoints he faced and smashed five aces to keep his serves.
Rosol will next confront the 16th seed, Kei Nishikori, who downed the Slovakian ace, Lukas Lacko, in straight sets to set-up this meeting.
The world number two, Rafael Nadal, will accompany the Czech in the third round. Nadal blasted past the Colombian contender, Santiago Giraldo, with a bagel to book this spot. He smoothly kept entire serves and broke the Colombian’s serve five times to seal
the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 score line.
